1. Why did we switch from Google Maps to Mapbox for mapping in Scribe Cemetery? We switched to Mapbox to provide users with several key benefits, including:

  • Improved Zoom Levels: Mapbox allows for much closer zooming, which is especially useful for smaller graves, memorials, and the interment of ashes. This gives users more precision when managing cemetery plots.
  • Expanded Map Styles: Users can now switch between different map styles (e.g., Light View and Street View) using the toolbar in the bottom-left corner of the map view.

2. I’ve noticed that the satellite imagery in some areas isn’t as good as it was with Google Maps. Why is that? We understand that in some areas, the satellite imagery in Mapbox may not be as high-quality as Google Maps. This is due to differences in how each service sources its imagery. While some areas may have clearer satellite views with Mapbox, others may not be as detailed at present.

3. Is there anything being done to improve satellite imagery? Yes! We plan to introduce the APGB (Aerial Photography for Great Britain) layer next year. APGB offers high-resolution aerial imagery specifically for the UK, and this will significantly enhance the quality of satellite views, particularly for users in Great Britain.

4. How should I use the different map styles to get the best results? We recommend the following approach:

  • Start by using the Satellite view to establish the boundaries of your graves or cemetery site, focusing on the corner or edge plots.
  • Once you’ve set the boundaries, switch to Light View or Street View to fill in the graves within the boundaries.
  • When switching the map style, you will also be able to zoom in much further than with Google Maps, making it easier to handle small graves, memorials, or areas for the interment of ashes. As long as the relationship between the plots is consistent, this method will work well.

5. Will the APGB layer be an additional cost or automatically included? At present, we are planning to integrate the APGB layer as part of our continued service improvement. More details will be provided closer to the time of release.
